Common questions
Which regime is the default in FY 2026-27?
The new regime is the default. You can still opt for the old regime if your deductions make it cheaper.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax free?
Under the new regime, a Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh tax free. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, that is a salary of about ₹12.75 lakh.
Which deductions work in the new regime?
Mainly the standard deduction and the employer's NPS contribution. 80C, 80D, HRA and home loan interest on a self-occupied home are old-regime deductions.
